How does fiber optic technology work?

In conventional copper technology, data is transmitted using current pulses. In contrast, fiber optic technology uses extremely narrow fiber optic cables (also known as optical fibers) to transmit optical signals at the speed of light. This enables a much higher maximum bandwidth. This means that more information can be transmitted per unit of time and a symmetrical line is also possible (i.e. the speed in megabits per second is the same for uploads as it is for downloads).

Fibre optic cables can be laid over several hundred kilometers without intermediate amplifiers. In addition, a signal transmitted via fiber optic cable is insensitive to electrical and magnetic interference fields and offers a fairly high level of protection against eavesdropping.
