Demographic trends and the "outpatient before inpatient" strategy mean that outpatient services will become the mainstay of needs-based care. Spitex will be caring for significantly more elderly people and will have to deal with increasingly complex care and support situations.

In order to meet these challenges, seven municipalities in the Zofingen area with around 50,000 inhabitants approved the regionalization of Spitex services in 2017.
