Orthodontics

Introduction

• Orthodontics deals with the causes, diagnosis and treatment of misaligned teeth and jaws. In the majority of cases, these do not cause any physical discomfort, but are often perceived as aesthetically disturbing and unacceptable by those affected. Consequently, the aim of most treatments is to achieve a pleasing tooth position and therefore an attractive appearance. However, this goal can only be achieved in the long term if the teeth are brought into a harmonious and functionally undisturbed relationship with each other, the jaws and the surrounding soft tissues such as the tongue and lip.

Treatment

• Each tooth and jaw misalignment is unique in its constellation. Successful treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment. This includes a medical history, clinical examination and analysis of orthodontic documents (radiographs, models and photographs). Finally, a treatment plan can be derived from the findings obtained, with which the treatment goal can be achieved efficiently and straightforwardly.
The orthodontist uses instruments, commonly known as "braces", to carry out the planned corrections.The choice of braces depends on the treatment plan and not on the patient's preferences. Braces are not machines. Successful treatment requires not only their professional handling but also the impeccable cooperation of the patient.

Timing

• The ideal time for treatment depends on the type of malocclusion. The vast majority of our patients are treated between the ages of 10 and 15. For certain malocclusions, earlier intervention or waiting until growth is complete is indicated. In order not to miss the ideal time, an initial orthodontic examination is recommended when the patient reaches school age.
Treatment of adults is possible, but often requires the involvement of specialists in oral surgery, prosthetics and periodontology.

Costs

• In the case of serious misaligned teeth and jaws, the costs of treatment are covered by disability insurance or basic health insurance.
• For less serious misalignments, the costs are borne by the patient or their parents. Most children and adolescents today have supplementary dental insurance, which contributes 50% or more to the cost of treatment, depending on the insurance model. Such supplementary insurance should already be taken out at pre-kindergarten age.
Many municipalities also contribute to the costs of orthodontic treatment as part of school dental care.
