Heart rate variability HRV measurements
Our body constantly adapts to the changing living conditions provided by the outside world. Regulatory mechanisms coordinate and maintain the optimal functioning of our organs and systems while using resources and energy as sparingly as possible, with the aim of maintaining our health and staying physically and mentally fit.
This constant adaptation and optimal functioning of all regulatory mechanisms takes place through the evolutionarily developed and perfected autonomic nervous system, which is divided into two branches: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic. It enables us, largely unconsciously, to react optimally to stimuli from inside and outside. This must be done under the conditions of conserving and rebuilding resources.
The best thing for your health is that the ability to adapt through optimal regulation, i.e. the interaction between the sympathetic nervous system (accelerator pedal) and parasympathetic nervous system (brake pedal) functions optimally and is not impaired by our lifestyle, environmental conditions and illnesses.
The control of the autonomic nervous system can be measured with heart rate variability.
The heartbeat measured by pulse monitoring only shows how fast and strongly the heart is beating. However, it is important to know how (un)regularly the heart beats. This shows the quality of the organism's ability to regulate itself. The regulation from heartbeat to heartbeat must be adapted to the respective needs of the body, i.e. the intervals between two heartbeats are irregular, sometimes faster, sometimes slower in the range of milliseconds. When the heartbeat is faster, the sympathetic nervous system (accelerator pedal) is involved; when the intervals between two beats increase, the parasympathetic nervous system (brake pedal) predominates. If the intervals between the individual heartbeats are more or less the same, then the vegetative regulation is running in emergency mode. The human system cannot adapt to the current requirements.
"If the heartbeat becomes as regular as the tapping of the woodpecker or the raindrop on the roof, the patient will die within four days." Wang Shu-HE, Chinese physician 300 A.D.
The complete measurement takes place over 24 hours and shows the adaptation of the heart and breathing to daytime activity, sleep quality and how relaxation and regeneration take place overnight. All of these vital processes are controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system.
The autonomic nervous system controls all functions in the body through the interplay of the sympathetic nervous system (accelerator pedal) in emergency situations, threats, danger, stress and the parasympathetic nervous system (brake pedal) is responsible for relaxation, rest, recuperation, regeneration and healing.
The consequences of disturbed health regulation can be manifold:
Impairments of the immune and cardiovascular system, digestion and microbiome, etc., including disturbed epigenetic regulation. It is therefore very important to control your own regulatory capacity. It is possible to prophylactically maintain or regain optimal regulatory capacity by taking simple measures. Improving the regulatory mechanisms can also have a positive effect on illnesses.
