HISTORY
The story of the founder, Sisinio Caola
Sisinio Caola, born on July 23, 1908 in Pinzolo in Val Rendena (Trentino), the valley of knife grinders because there this craft was a tradition handed down from father to son.
Sisinio Caola began working in the late 1920s following his father from village to village.
In '32 he arrived in Ticino: a hard life, up and down the valleys, for good or bad weather, pushing the grinding wheel by hand.
Sometimes there wasn't even a road, just a few bumpy paths...and the income was what it was! People, at first, were rather wary, but then, in time, it became popular.
During the late 1930s he transferred the grindstone to the bicycle and later to the motorcycle buggies.
In '45 he moved to Mendrisio and here, on San Damiano Street, he opened his first workshop with an attached workshop.
But he, in the store, was hardly in it. Behind the counter his wife Albertina, then a daughter, a son...Caola loved life in the open air, on village streets, in markets, at fairs: knife-grinder and peddler.
The Caola loved life in the open air, on village streets, in markets, at fairs: knife-grinder and peddler.
In time he had bought a van on which he transported all kinds of tools, set up his stall and displayed his wares there: agricultural tools, household items, cutlery...The store, larger and more functional, had meanwhile moved it to Banchette, and there his son Paolo and grandson Davide continue the family tradition.
Before leaving, Sisinio had the satisfaction of seeing the business he had loved so much passed on to two more generations. Sisinio Caola passed away on August 12, 1996, at the age of 88.
