At Martigny, a baobab reinvents the bookshop

At a time when books are offered for sale even in post offices, how do you assert the singularity of a bookshop? An original answer has been provided in Martigny, since September 2013, with a place where books take pride of place in a colorful, avant-garde-designed space, alongside exhibitions and workshops. All under the emblem of the baobab, the palaver tree dear to the hearts of Africans.

"It's hard to get a foothold against the big commercial chains and internet sales. Between 1998 and 2008, no fewer than 20 bookshops closed in French-speaking Switzerland! But we're convinced that contact, welcome and, above all, advice are more important than ever." Yasmina Giaquinto-Carron, founder of the future "Librairie du Baobab", is aware that with her "crazy idea" she is going against the tide. But this English teacher with a degree in literature doesn't let it bother her.
