Gestalt therapy - practical information
- Creation
Originating from the humanist and existential currents, Gestalt therapy was created in 1951 by Frederick Perls (1893-1970), German neuro-psychoanalyst Laura Perls (1905-1990), German doctor of psychology and psychoanalyst and Paul Goodman (1911-1972), philosopher and writer.
Gestalt therapy results from the meeting of several currents of thought: psychoanalytical approaches (S. Freud, W. Reich, O. Rank),Gestalt-theory or psychology of form, phenomenology, holism, existentialism, humanism ...
- How?
Integrated into an individualized therapeutic relationship in which the therapist invests himself personally, change comes from experimenting with new behaviors discovered here and now in a relationship of trust where the quality of contactis privileged.
The client is active and responsible (and not a passive "patient"). He visits his bodily sensations, desires, fantasies, emotions, past and desired future and gives them a dynamic form aimed at transforming his existence. He is master on board and decides himself, more and more, on the desired direction. There is no "normality" to achieve or predetermined goal. Gestalt therapy respects the journey and specificity of each individual.
The therapeutic work will involve bodily, emotional, affective and mental exploration, and will rely much more on the"how" than on the "why".
- For whom?
Gestalt therapy is particularly recommended for people seeking épanouissement, a better understanding of themselves, people going through a difficult period (bereavement, loneliness, separation), those experiencing family difficulties, educational difficulties, professional problems such as harassment, unemployment, or to those suffering from anxiety, mood disorders (aggressiveness, irritability, depression), psychosomatic physical problems (back pain, migraines, digestive problems), eating disorders, to depressed people or encountering sexual difficulties.
