From matching passpartout, picture frames to oil painting mounting to handmade unique frames with white or orange gold leaf as well as silver or platinum gold  Here we can respond specifically to your needs in terms of size and color and thus create the perfect frame for your requirements.

Our areas of expertise include the production of Art Nouveau and Renaissance frames in-house, specially tailored to your picture or mirror. The restoration and gilding of important objects and relics such as Buddha figures and church altars is also an area in which we have already gained a great deal of experience.

About us

M. Senn & M. Bader Swiss certified gilders

The Maschera d'Oro picture frame studio has been around for 26 years. It was founded by Monika Bader and Martina Senn. Both trained as picture frame gilders. In our studio in Arlesheim Basel-Land we design everything lovingly by hand. We make special frames for your pictures, suitable in size and colors.

Everything your picture desires!

As a specialist store for handmade picture frames, restorations, mirrors and gilding we offer you everything you need for your picture. From matching passepartout, picture frames to oil painting mounting to handmade unique frames with white or orange gold leaf as well as silver or platinum gold. Passepartout cardboard in 80 different light shades in museum quality as well as high-quality special glasses correspond to our standard. You have also come to the right place for mirror & picture repairs and restorations of objects and picture frames. On request, we will be happy to visit you in Baselland or Basel to advise you or to collect, deliver and/or install your picture or mirror.

Specialist areas

Our specialties include the production of Art Nouveau and Renaissance frames in-house, specially tailored to your picture or mirror. We are also the only specialist store in German-speaking Switzerland to specialize in the hand-crafting of Venetian masks. Around Christmas time you will find wooden baubles lovingly handcrafted and finished with gold leaf. The restoration and gilding of important objects and relics such as Buddha figures and church altars is an area in which we have already gained a great deal of experience.

STYLE FRAME

Each frame profile has its own art-historical period, ornaments and techniques: We will be happy to advise you on the right style frame for your work of art. From Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque to Biedermeier, Art Nouveau and Historicism, we will make the right frame for you. We also offer reworking of existing period frames or the completion and restoration of damaged frames. Together we (Monika Bader & Martina Senn) have 52 years of professional experience, and can therefore draw on our practiced knowledge.  Above you can see a Renaissance Aedicule frame handmade with mirror at Maschera d'Oro.

MIRROR FRAME

In our store you will find everything from Renaissance frames with etching ornaments to engraved Art Nouveau frames. We are also happy to be inspired by you and your ideas and work with you to develop the most beautiful solution to perfectly display your artwork.

MODERN FRAMES

Whether a simple wooden frame, a glazed, painted or natural precious wood frame, gold leaf with white gold, silver or orange gold in countless different profiles. Together we will find the right frame for you. We can also mount your picture or object in a Plexiglas hood or between two Plexiglas panes.

FRAME PRODUCTION & MATERIAL

We lovingly handcraft all of our over corner frames ourselves in our studio. We only use high-quality materials and traditional processing techniques. Here are some of our frames:

Removable frames

We supply exchangeable frames in standard sizes as well as custom-made frames. We use flawless, high-quality materials such as acid-free cardboard and acid-free adhesives. We work with special glass, such as anti-reflective art glass with 70% UV protection or museum glass with 95% UV protection, so that your artwork is optimally protected for many years. We cut the passe-partout to size in-house, also with a round or oval cut-out.

The roots of the gilding trade go back to the Middle Ages

Recipes, materials and techniques have remained almost unchanged to this day. We are committed to this, which is why we create high-quality classic and modern picture and mirror frames in our frame atelier & gilding workshop. Like their historical models, these are characterized by their durability and develop a beautiful patina over the years. Gilding techniques:

• Poliment gilding
• Oil gilding
• Backglass gilding ("old school" shop window advertising)
• Surface design of wooden objects etc.

 

A mirror is like a work of art that reflects whatever is at its center.

Our mirrors are unique pieces, made in our workshop in Arlesheim Baselland and therefore there is no such thing as twice.

Since the creation of the mirror, there have been very few more important objects. Not for nothing was the mirror reserved for the nobility in earlier times. For our perception, mirrors act like windows and so a wall becomes a room that opens outwards and yet we only see ourselves. It is interesting to note that no picture (even taken with the best camera) can capture a person as well as a mirror. Therefore, the impression this work of art leaves is always unique and this is the only way to really find the fault in the mirror.

A room without a mirror is like a room without light. This effect is actually a physical law that can only be achieved really well with high-quality mirrors (at least 2mm) . This is because the mirror does not let the beam of light through, but bends the straight beam of light and sends it back wherever we are standing. This makes the light have multiple effects in the room and we feel happy and cheerful.

In order to achieve the best lighting effect, we only use mirrors with a minimum diameter of 2 mm. Of course, we make the frame ourselves in our own workshop using various ornamentation techniques, with white gold, orange gold or silver. We will work with you to find the perfect mirror to suit your living situation.

Picture frames have the function of protecting paintings and graphics in the long term, complementing them stylistically and presenting them in the best possible way.

Historic frames are important antiques today. Passionate collectors of antique frames include museums, galleries and private customers.

We replace missing or damaged parts with the utmost care and expertise. Whether for old, carved and gilded picture frames and mirrors, candlesticks or turned woodwork. We would be happy to discuss your requirements with you and the restoration of antique frames is one of our favorite jobs.

We can combine our frame profiles with any conceivable color or gold/silver setting to create a truly convincing result. As skilled and experienced gilders, we are able to develop individual framing proposals that are perfectly tailored to your painting. Especially in the higher-quality painting sector, standard industrial moldings are hardly appropriate, and certainly not for older art. This is precisely what we specialize in, and we can also create visually convincing reproductions of old styles that are so characteristic of antique picture frames.

We only use wood from sustainable cultivation in Europe for our wooden frames. You can choose from a wide variety of woods such as maple, pear, cherry, oak, lime, walnut and spruce. All our wooden profiles can of course  also be manufactured by us as round or oval frames.
